This winter, new flights and expanded service from major hub airports will make Colorado Ski Country USA more accessible to skiers and snowboarders from all over the world. Women’s Ski Jumping USA

Sarah Hendrickson showed why she is the world champion in women’s ski jumping by soaring to a first place finish in the US Ski Jumping Championships on Sunday, October 12th in Lake Placid , New York .  Sarah said she was happy to jump, what she called, “two satisfactory” jumps, and ended up in first place.  Her teammate, Jessica Jerome, followed with a close 2nd.  Jessica stated that the conditions were good, they all jumped well, and anyone could have won, but she was happy for Sarah.  She said that they are all pushing each other to prepare well for their upcoming competitions.  The US Visa Women’s Ski Jumping Team will be returning to Park City to continue their training.  Coach Alborn plans to name the 2014/2015 team in early November.

Steamboat Moves to Protect Their Trademark Name:  We all recognize the trademark ” Ski Town USA “ that has gone along with the Steamboat name for decades.  Both Steamboat Ski Resort and the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club have registered Ski Town, U.S.A. with the US Patent and Trademark Office, having used the term since 1959.   On the heels of the launch of a marketing campaign by Visit Salt Lake to promote Salt Lake City and its four member resorts (Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird) as Ski City USA, which appeared to be an effort to attract visitors away from places like Park City and Steamboat, Steamboat Springs, Colo., moved to protect its trademark Ski Town, U.S.A. in the Federal District Court for the District of Colorado by filing a complaint against Visit Salt Lake, the four mentioned resort areas.  It looks like Visit Salt Lake will have to come up with another idea.

1989 World Alpine Ski Championship Time Capsule to be Opened

For the past 26 years a bronze rectangular object has stood guard in the hall, outside of the entrance to the Vail Public Library, adorned with the trophy that was presented to the medal winners at the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships.  The 1989 organizers assembled the capsule prior to the start of the Vail Valley’s first World Championships.  They intended for the time capsule to be opened prior to the start of the next Championships the community was fortunate enough to host,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation and head of the 2015 Organizing Committee.  “Somewhere along the way, the capsule and its contents got forgotten in the buildup to the 1999 World Championships.  Now, just three and a half months away from the 2015 Championships, it will be fun to reminisce on those first Championships and see what is contained inside the capsule.” The capsule will be opened on October 21st, in conjunction of the start of the Council’s regular work session.  The 1989 World Championships marked the first time in almost 40 years that the event had been hosted in the United States.  A then record number of 42 nations were in attendance, represented by a total of 291 athletes.  The 2015 World Championships will feature some 600 athletes from an estimated 70 nations.

FAR WEST SKI FOUNDATION

Far West Ski Foundation and KIND Causes

One of the Foundations’ efforts is to support the rehabilitation for wounded servicemen and servicewomen.   The Vail Veteran’s Program is participating in KIND Causes – a program from KIND Snacks that supports ideas aimed at making the world a little kinder.  Each month, KIND gives $10,000 to an individual or organization spreading kindness to those in need. Through the month of October, you can vote for this cause here:   http://causes.kindsnacks.com/cause/vail-veterans-program/.  Each vote will bring the Vail Veteran’s Program one step closer to receiving the grant.  By voting, you are committing to doing a kind act or good deed of your own.  The thought here is that small acts make a BIG impact, and we can all benefit from paying it forward. Contributions to the Far West Ski Foundation may be made online at: www.farwestskifoundation.org or by mail to: FWSF, Box 861 , Fallbrook, CA 92088.
